Michael Marley's Website

Welcome to my website!  My name is Michael Marley, and I am a 20-year-old college senior studying Computer Science at North Carolina State University.  I should be graduating sometime in 2014.  I am also a freelance web designer.  You can find links to some of my projects on this site.  My résumé is attached (from the home page, click "Read More" to get the link).  If you have any questions for me, then you can head over to the forum to ask.

TVStext (Transit Textualization System)

Have you ever been waiting at an NCSU bus stop and wanted to know where your bus was, but not had a laptop to access Transloc's wonderful TVS?  Well, now you can access it from anywhere with cell phone coverage!  I have set up a system called TVStext (not to be confused with the TVS Text site from Transloc) that allows anyone to send a text message (SMS message) to tvstext@michaelmarley.com containing an NCSU Wolfline route name/number and receive a response containing the location of each bus traveling that route.  For a complete list of routes and how to access them, click here.  The service is, of course, entirely free; however standard text messaging rates may apply depending on your cell phone plan.  This service is neither provided by or affiliated with Transloc, Inc in any way.  Report any problems in the TVStext forum or to me (michael@michaelmarley.com), not Transloc.  TVStext is an open source project; you can find the changelog and source code on GitHub.

Blackout against SOPA and PIPA

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) are two proposed laws in Congress which would completely eliminate the Internet as we know it.  It would make everyone liable for infringing content uploaded by only a few people.  Instead of punishing the actual pirates, these laws would punish any site which mentioned the infringing material.  Without armies of humans to censor uploaded material, any website with a wiki, blog, forum, guestbook, or any other form of user-submitted content would be unsustainable.  If a pirate uploaded copyright-infringing mat

Modded IDT/SigmaTel Driver 6370 released!

As it turned out, I had missed the announcement on the LV2G forums about a later version of the IDT drivers.  So, here it is, version 6370 from Intel.  This version has the "stcplx.dll" file back.  I am not quite sure what that file does.  It probably has something to do with the IDT Control Panel.  This control panel is not packaged with my driver, but if needed you can grab the itcpl(64).cpl from another driver and run it directly while mine is installed.  You can get more information and download the driver here.

Modded IDT/SigmaTel Driver 6367 released!

A new (apparently somewhat major) IDT sound driver update has been released by HP.  This update was released in two separate packages, one for 32-bit systems and one for 64-bit.  My package, as usual, contains support for both.  Additionally, one .DLL file, "stcplx.dll", was removed from the driver package.  The driver still appears to install and work correctly without it, however.  You can get more information and download the driver here.

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas to all of my (admittedly very few) blog readers.  I hope it was wonderful for all of you.

This year, I gave my brother Matthew a website for Christmas, which I am letting him host on my server.  You can check it out: http://matthewtmarley.com.

Server CPU upgrade complete

The server's CPU upgrade is now complete.  I upgraded the old Pentium 4 3gHz (Northwood) to a Pentium 4 3.4gHz (Prescott).  The new processor is the fastest CPU available for Socket 478.  In addition to being faster, it also has twice the cache.  After recompiling all the server binaries (Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc), performance improved by about 40ms per page load.

Complete specifications for my server:

Intel Pentium 4 3.4gHz (Prescott) processor (800MT/s FSB)
Intel i875p/ICH5 (Canterwood) chipset
2GB dual-channel DDR400 RAM

Modded IDT/SigmaTel Driver 6365 released!

I have just uploaded a new modified SigmaTel/IDT audio driver, version 6365 from HP.  As usual, the package has been tested and found to work with a Dell Inspiron 1520/Vostro 1500 and an Intel DP45SG motherboard.  You can get more information and download the driver here.

TVStext isn't obsolete after all, at least for now...

TransLoc seems to be taking their own sweet time getting GoLive's SMS function online, so TVStext will continue to operate for the forseeable future.  Sorry for the confusion.

TVStext will soon be obsolete :(

I have just found out that TransLoc will be deploying GoLive, its new interface for accessing bus information for the NC Triangle, in two days on October 19.  This new system includes native access over text messaging, which will most certainly be better and faster than TVStext.  Additionally, if the online interface changes significantly, TVStext will fail to work properly.  For a combination of these to reasons, I plan to take TVStext offline as soon as GoLive is available and confirmed to be working.
